PORTRAIT SUBJECT QUESTIONS

The dog doesn't like my daughter, how can we paint a portrait of the two of them together? How to work with uncooperative subjects

The best way is to use a "set" to pose them on. For instance, take a picture of your daughter in a chair. Then stand in the same place at the same level and take a picture of the dog sitting next to the chair. The two photos can be combined to make one painting! The painting of Maddie & the Cats shown below was painted using this method. Each of the animals was photographed on the chair, then the photos were combined to create one marvelous portrait.

If you can't get photos in similar settings, I can still paint a portrait of them together, but it's a bit more difficult.

Using heirloom or historical photos for a portrait

Heirloom portraits can be created using old photographs. A sepia or black & white photo can be painted into a full-color portrait using other relative's coloring for reference, or a portrait may be painted in sepia tones. This gives a truly heirloom look to your artwork. Click here to for specifics and pricing, which is a bit less than standard portrait pricing.

I saw a portrait of a husband & wife together as children, do you do this?

Yes, I do. An interesting anniversary or wedding gift is a portrait painted of the couple as children. If you have a photograph of each person as a child, they can be combined to produce an adorable portrait of them together as children!

Memorial Pastel Portrait

My child did not leave the hospital after birth and all I have are photos with tubes and tape covering almost their whole face, can you paint a portrait of them that looks normal?

First, please accept my sympathy. I cannot imagine how hard it must be to lose a precious child. I can create a portrait of your beautiful baby as they would look without the tapes and tubes. Please click here to see an example of a memorial portrait. If you have photos of a sibling at that age, I can use them as reference, too. Please click here to for more information.

Cody & Buddy

Pastel Portrait

My pet just passed away, is it too late to get a portrait?

Many of my clients have had memorial portraits painted. If you have a photograph of your pet I can paint a beautiful portrait. Depending on the quality of the photo, we may have to find some additional reference pictures, such as coloring, but you'll love the resulting portrait. You can choose to paint them as forever young & vibrant, or as older & wiser, the way you most recently saw them.

(back to questions)

Can you combine two or more photos to make a portrait?

Many of my portraits are composed of more than one photograph, it is my specialty. Here are a few examples: Cody & Buddy (2 photos) Maddie & the Cats (five photos), The 3 Cats (4 photos), Scout & Molly (2 photos), Sugar & Harley (2 photos). For suggestions on posing for multiple photos see "Working with Uncooperative Subjects"

Will you paint a portrait of my house or car?

Yes, I will paint home and vehicle portraits. Here is an example of a fire truck sketch and a painting of a courthouse. The price depends on the subject & size, click here to for details. As with all my paintings, your satisfaction is GUARANTEED!

Will you paint an animal that I don't own?

If you'd like a painting of an animal such as a wild animal or specific breed, I will be happy to do one. I can provide the reference photos myself, you won't even have to send a photo unless you have one you want to use.

PHOTOGRAPHY QUESTIONS

Will my portrait look like my photograph?

I can make the painting look almost exactly like your photograph, or I can use artistic creativity to portray the subject, it's up to you and what you like.

(back to questions)

Can I use digital photos?

The painting of Maddie & the cats was created using all digital photography! One actual photo of each subject was mailed to me so that I could be sure that the coloring was correct because of the variance in digital cameras and monitors, but the actual photos used for the portrait were digital photos emailed to me over the internet.

(back to questions)

Can I use an old photo that isn't very good?

Well, I'd rather you didn't ;o) but if it's the only one you have, I'm sure we can make a beautiful portrait from it.

(back to questions)

Can I use studio photos that were taken by a professional photographer?

I can use a studio portrait as reference for colors & features. I just can't copy the exact layout, pose & background without written permission from the photographer.

(back to questions)

Who takes the photos?

Usually, the client takes the photos. If you live within 100 miles of me, I will drive out and take photos if you would like, I charge $100 plus the cost of film & developing if I have to make a special trip. HOWEVER I go to Waco and Dallas/Fort Worth every once in a while, and I'd be glad to stop off and take photos for you AT NO CHARGE while I'm there.

(back to questions)

What if I only have a black & white photograph?

Merely provide another photo or magazine ad or something that has the right coloring and I can create a beautiful portrait for you. John's portrait (at left) was painted from a b/w photo:
